Breezy Island

"Music Under the Stars" in Dover

DOVER – There weren't any swaying palm trees to  lounge under or any icy margaritas to sip but there were lots of  folks wearing straw hats, their best plastic leis and colorful  Hawaiian-print shirts to listen to the sounds of Parrotville at the  gazebo at JFK Commons on Sunday, July 21. This band played some  special songs by singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett along with other  tropical island tunes. (above left) Parrotville lead singer  Remy St. Martin; and Snake, on Guitar; perform at the Gazebo. (above right) The Crowd gathers for the popular Jimmy Buffet  tunes. (right) Sandy Booket, of Springfield and Liam  Rafferty, of Sparta, enjoy the tunes.

This fun seasonal event is part of the "Music Under  the Stars" summer concert series

sponsored by Dover Renaissance, Inc., a nonprofit volunteer  organization dedicated to improving the public's image of Dover  Township as well as its overall quality of life. In addition to this  concert series, some of the group's other projects include the Dover  Street Clock, the Story Poles of Dover, the landscaping at the  Blackwell-Prospect Triangle and the Doors of Dover holiday  decorating contest.

The more than 200 concertgoers enjoyed some familiar  Buffett songs like "Margaritaville," "Brown-Eyed Girl," "Volcano,"  "Tin Cup Chalice," and "Cheeseburger in Paradise." Convenient for  those who attended with children was a fenced-in playground right on  the gazebo grounds.

A flood of memories came rushing back to this writer  upon hearing these songs; memories of a trip to the warm and  wonderful Florida Keys back in 1993 when we visited Key West (very  tropical) and Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Café. All we ate and  drank that week was conch burgers, chowder and fritters with  Margaritas on the rocks! And how could I forget that awesome Key  Lime pie!

The two remaining concerts of the season feature DeSol  (Latin rhythm and American pop) on July 28, and Nice n' Easy (a  tribute to Frank Sinatra) on Aug. 4, both at 7  p.m.
